Endeavor Jordan Concludes Fourth Annual DealMakers Event

Amman, November 2016 - Connecting top international, regional and local investors with some of the technology sector’s most promising entrepreneurs, Endeavor Jordan has concluded DealMakers 2016, its fourth annual information and communications technology (ICT) investment matchmaking event. Held on 7 and 8 November, 2016, at the Grand Hyatt Amman, DealMakers 2016 aimed to elevate the conversation on how both investors and business owners can collectively maximize the investment and divestment potential of Arab start-ups and scale-ups.

Supported by Platinum Sponsor, Arab Bank, and Gold Sponsor-Telecom Partner, Umniah, the event drew the participation of ICT and ICT-enabled companies, angel investors and venture capital firms from ten different countries. The event comprised a series of conversations and collective design exercises, during which entrepreneurs and investors addressed business challenges and opportunities in an open dialogue, contributing to the design of a more efficient and dynamic deal-making ecosystem.

DealMakers kicked off with interactive workshops geared towards preparing entrepreneurs for fundraising, facilitated by Amsterdam-based THNK School for Creative Leadership. The first session, titled ‘Re-THNK to Fundraise’, exposed participants to ways of filtering through investor feedback and learning to accept constructive criticism to find the gold. This was followed by the ‘Re-THNK the Investor Ecosystem’ session, which allowed participants to map the ideal investor profile and ask the right questions to find their ideal investor-match. Next, entrepreneurs learned how to connect to target audiences based on their passion and purpose through a storytelling workshop. Meanwhile, Endeavor Investor Network held a closed Investor Roundtable discussion, allowing angel investors and venture capital firms to share the latest developments within the local and regional ICT and investment landscapes, as well as to explore co-investment opportunities.

Day Two commenced with a keynote talk by Co-Founder and Managing Director of Careem, Mudassir Sheikha, who shared the story behind the company's growth journey. The morning session carried on with a panel discussion named ‘The Entrepreneurs Take, Fundraising Woes’, featuring entrepreneurs Ala' AlSallal of Jamalon; Khalil Shadid of ReserveOut; Mohammed Shaker of ArabiaWeather Inc.; and Hussam Hammo of Tamatem Inc., who shared their experiences in successfully raising funds from regional and international investors. The event culminated in the one-on-one speed networking sessions, during which entrepreneurs sat with investors for 15 minutes each over the course of two hours to pitch their businesses.

“The annual DealMakers event continues to be a highly-anticipated event for entrepreneurs and investors alike, given the vast learning and investment opportunities it provides. Funding remains a key challenge that entrepreneurs face today,” said Rasha Manna, Managing Director of Endeavor Jordan. “For this reason, we made sure that this year’s program addressed funding issues during the workshops, speeches and panel discussions. Having prominent entrepreneurs come in and give personal accounts of their own journeys was especially beneficial, and I am sure participants walked out with a renewed sense of purpose and confidence in their startups.”

“As always, the event drew the participation of many great entrepreneurs. There has been this misconception that there is a brain drain of entrepreneurs and quality startups, which have migrated to the Gulf, and that Jordan has lost its position as a regional tech hub. However, this event has proven otherwise,” commented Omar Sati, Co-Founder and Managing Director of DASH Ventures. “I encountered experienced entrepreneurs whom I had previously met, and whose products and business models have evolved over the years to bring them to a much better position today. It takes time, effort, ambition and resilience to overcome challenges and to design business models that are quite disruptive. I believe we have found a pipeline of investment opportunities for DASH Ventures, and I look forward to attending many more of these events.”

“The event was very well-organized, and I really enjoyed meeting Jordanian entrepreneurs, whom I feel are very authentic and interested in building not only valuable businesses, but also a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. We at BECO Capital are excited to explore the opportunities available here and hopefully find the first business to invest in. I also enjoyed the format of the event; it was intimate and engaging with interesting sessions, panels and discussions. I will walk away today with greater insights on what we can do as an investor community,’ said Sorusch Amiri, an Associate at BECO Capital.
